I have been a longtime fan of the Fight Club movie so naturally I decided to read a book and I won't lie I still prefer the film, it's one of my all time favorite cinema pieces and no, it's not because of Brad Pitt, even though he is quite good in it. So here are some thoughts about the novel I felt like sharing with you.
Fight Club arises several problems we are facing in our world today. Numero Uno being the lack of sincerity, honesty. The Narrator couldn't cry for several years, but when Bob, a "big cheesebread" with testicular cancer opens up and tells his whole story, Narrator finally lets it all out, gets lost in oblivion.
As heard from Chuck Palahniuk (Paula-Nick in case you are confused with pronunciation as well:) ) in one of his interviews, the Narrator had a problem with giving love, but he needed love himself, so only way to get what he wanted was going to different support groups. What could be the cause of this numbness? Life. The Routine. The insignificance of each day, that formed into weeks and weeks formed into months, and then what the protagonist of the story got was 2 years of insomnia, with inability to touch or feel anything.
Besides the obvious moral lessons you can learn from Fight Club, you will also be taught stuff like how to make napalm with only gasoline and diet coke, not that you'll need this in the future but if you think about it, most of us know nothing about how things work; Imagine if you were transferred in past, what could you give to those people? A disk? A USB card? They wouldn't even have a computer to plug it and probably you would be burned on fire for having a "pact with the devil". So I think it is important to know how things were made and not be just a lazy consumer, content with everything they are offered, unable to create anything themselves.
"This is only real thing in my life" - human relationships, honesty, sharing, without these we will be just robots, statistic. we'll become tourists in search for pure feelings and emotions like the characters of the story.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:
"You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. Buy the sofa, then for couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then, you're trapped in your lovely nest and the things you used to own, now they own you."
""If you don't know what you want", the doorman said, "You end up with a lot you don't.""
"Tyler asks, is this a problem for me?
I am Joe's Clenching Bowels.
No, I say, It's fine.
Put a gun to my head and paint the wall with my brains.
Just great, I say. Really."
"Worker bees can leave
Even drones can fly away
The queen is their slave"
"Tyler lies back and asks, "If Marilyn Monroe was alive right now, what would she be doing?"
I say, goodnight.
The headliner hangs down in shreds from the ceiling, and Tyler says, "Clawing at the lid of her coffin.""
"This is why I love support groups so much, if people thought you were dying, they gave you their full attention."
"Chloe was the way Joni Mitchell's skeleton would look if you made it smile and made it walk around a party being extra special nice to everyone."
"Fight club gets to be your reason for going to the gym and keeping your haircut short and cutting your nails. The gyms you go to are crowded with guys trying to look like men, as if being a man means looking the way a sculptor or an art director says.
Like Tyler says, even a souffle looks pumped."
"What Marla loves, she says, is all the things that people love intensely and then dump an hour or a day after. The way a Christmas Tree is the center of attention, then, after Christmas you see those dead Christmas Trees with a tinsel still on them, dumped alongside the highway. You see those trees and think of roadkill animals or sex crime victims wearing their underwear inside out and bound with black electrical tape."
"This is how Buddhist temples have tested applicants going back for bah-zillion years, Tyler says. You tell the applicant to go away, and if his resolve is so strong that he waits at the entrance without food or shelter or encouragement for three days, then and only then can he enter and begin the training."
""Remember this," Tyler said. "The people you're trying to step on, we're everyone you depend on. We're the people who do your laundry and cook your food and serve your dinner. We make your bed. We guard you while you're asleep. We drive the ambulances. We direct your call. We are cooks and taxi drivers and we know everything about you. We process your insurance claims and credit card charges. We control every part of your life.
"We are the middle children of history, raised by television to believe that someday we'll be millionaires and movie stars and rock stars, but we won't. And we're just learning this fact," Tyler said. "So don't fuck with us.""
